Is 3D Printing Art? Hear What We Have to Say.

Team One may not have the best understanding of modern art, but what we do know with a fair amount of certainty is that 3D printed pieces look cool. Still, there are a lot of high-end critics in the art community looking at a machine-spun outline of an elephant head, scratching their heads and thinking, “Is this art?”

Our definition of the term is pretty simple: if it’s pretty, it’s art. But let’s go deeper here. Does 3D printing redefine what it means to be an artist? Or does it change what counts as art? Here’s our take on the answer.

New Medium, New Rules
One of the articles questioning a 3D printer’s place in the art world compares printed art to that of a camera – a blend between photography and sculpture. But as anyone with eyes can see, those two things are art! Printing is a new medium in the art world, and people are still trying to figure out what to make of it. While the rules of this medium are still in development, it does not nullify the medium’s existence. 3D printing is art!

Fact: Artists use Tools
If using a 3D printer is considered cheating, why isn’t a pencil? Artists need tools to bring their creativity to life – otherwise they’re just sitting around thinking about stuff. Like the keyboard innovated the type-writer, 3D printers are the next big thing used to channel out creative energy.

3D Printers Make Art, Not Artists
With downloadable blueprints of a variety of products, from a portrait to action figures, there’s no denying that you can get a lot of art without a lot of work. However, ordering a blueprint to something would be like ordering new pants online. But the creators of those blueprints, the architects behind the design, those people are artists! It’s impossible to argue against the time and effort these people spend making something beautiful.

Come on, Look at This Stuff
See for yourself the kind of art people are making with printers. The. Possibilities. Are. Endless
