4 Things 3D Printers Cannot Do (Yet!)

Nothing can do it all, but 3D printing comes pretty close. New innovations are popping up left and right to the point where you might be thinking, it can’t do everything, right? Wrong. At least, wrong-ish. While there are limits to 3D technology, engineers are working around them every day. See the current list of tasks 3D printers cannot do… at least not yet!

Make Popcorn
Fun fact: there is printed food out in the world, and we bet it’s delicious. In its current state, we can print simple layers of softer foods, such as dough in a cool shape or frosting on a cookie. So while you can get some pureed veggies, you can’t print a whole meal. Ergo, the fluffy crunchiness that is popcorn is out of the picture at the moment.

Give Life Advice
Imagine asking a printer to literally solve all your problems. Thing is, technology is trying to do that. Innovators around the world are working to incorporate AI into 3D printing. We have smartphones, why not smart printers? Eventually, engineers are working on printers capable of detecting cracks or other flaws in a printed product or printing process, then fix them completely on their own. So yes, it will give you advice. Just not the personal kind.

Get Dressed
Yes, 3D printed clothes are already a thing, but a printer cannot actually put them on people. As far as clothes go, getting the actual texture to be durable enough for the public is tricky, but we’re getting there. For now, most printed pieces are a bit fragile and, well, hole-y for everyday wear. But we can’t deny that the formal pieces are pretty cool. Still, a printer cannot dictate your fashion choices yet. It can only make suggestions.

That’s cheating!
